CertificateAbout this programme
The British English Language Programme – B2 (Upper-Intermediate) is designed for learners who possess a strong intermediate command of English and wish to use the language with greater accuracy, fluency and independence in academic, professional and social environments. The programme is based on the learning outcomes associated with Level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) and is informed by the linguistic and skills-based areas addressed within the Cambridge English B2 First framework. The curriculum provides integrated development across listening, speaking, reading and writing. Learners develop the ability to understand main ideas and significant details in lectures, interviews, discussions and media content concerning general, academic and professional subjects. The programme also strengthens learners’ ability to participate actively in extended discussions, present and support viewpoints, construct arguments, provide explanations and examples, and respond appropriately to differing opinions. In reading and writing, learners analyse articles, reports and subject-related texts appropriate to the level. They also produce clear, detailed and coherent written work, including essays, reports, formal and semi-formal correspondence and professional emails. Systematic attention is given to expanding vocabulary, applying more advanced grammatical structures, using idiomatic and commonly occurring expressions appropriately, and improving pronunciation, rhythm, stress and intonation in British English. Academic and Professional Description The British English Language Programme – B2 (Upper-Intermediate) aims to develop learners’ linguistic and communicative competence in accordance with the descriptors and learning outcomes of CEFR Level B2. The programme adopts an integrated approach that combines systematic language analysis with the practical application of English across academic, professional and social contexts. It enables learners to communicate with an appropriate degree of fluency and accuracy, understand abstract and subject-related ideas, and participate effectively in extended interaction. The curriculum addresses the following areas: Listening Understanding main ideas and supporting details in lectures, interviews, discussions and media content relating to general, academic and professional subjects. Speaking and Spoken Interaction Participating in extended discussions, presenting and defending viewpoints, developing arguments, providing reasons and examples, and responding clearly to alternative perspectives. Reading Understanding and analysing articles, reports and subject-related texts, while identifying purpose, viewpoint, main ideas and supporting information. Writing Producing clear, detailed and well-organised texts, including essays, reports, formal and semi-formal letters and professional correspondence, using a style appropriate to purpose and audience. Grammar and Vocabulary Applying a broad range of grammatical structures, academic and professional vocabulary, collocations and appropriate idiomatic expressions with increasing accuracy and flexibility. Pronunciation and Fluency Developing clarity of speech, stress, rhythm and intonation, while improving the ability to speak continuously and fluently in British English. Upon successful completion, learners are expected to understand the main ideas of complex spoken and written material, interact with an appropriate degree of fluency, produce clear and detailed texts, and present viewpoints and arguments in a structured manner consistent with CEFR Level B2.
