About this programme

The British English Language Programme – A2 (Elementary) is designed for learners who possess a basic knowledge of English and wish to develop greater accuracy, confidence and independence in everyday communication. The programme is based on the learning outcomes associated with Level A2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) and is informed by the linguistic and skills-based areas addressed within the Cambridge English A2 Key framework. The curriculum provides balanced development across the four principal language skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. It covers a range of familiar personal, social and practical contexts, including personal introductions, family, education, employment, travel, shopping, public services and everyday social interaction. Learners are provided with opportunities to understand short spoken exchanges, participate in simple and direct conversations, interpret short written texts, notices and messages, and produce brief personal and functional written communications. The programme also develops essential grammatical knowledge, functional vocabulary and British English pronunciation. Particular emphasis is placed on sentence formation, linguistic accuracy, clarity of expression and the appropriate use of language in context. Academic and Professional Description The British English Language Programme – A2 (Elementary) aims to develop learners’ linguistic and communicative competence in accordance with the descriptors and learning outcomes of CEFR Level A2. The programme adopts an integrated approach to language learning, combining the systematic study of grammar and vocabulary with the practical application of English in familiar personal, social and functional contexts. The curriculum addresses the following areas of language development: Listening Understanding the main information contained in short conversations, instructions, announcements and spoken texts delivered clearly and at an appropriate pace. Speaking and Spoken Interaction Participating in short exchanges on familiar topics, asking and responding to questions, providing personal information, and describing everyday activities, needs and experiences. Reading Understanding short and straightforward texts, including messages, notices, advertisements, instructions and simple functional materials, and identifying key information and main ideas. Writing Producing short, coherent texts, including personal messages, notes, forms and simple descriptions, using vocabulary and grammatical structures appropriate to the level. Grammar and Vocabulary Applying essential grammatical structures and developing a functional vocabulary related to everyday personal, social and practical situations. Pronunciation Developing clarity of speech and greater awareness of the sounds, stress patterns, rhythm and intonation associated with British English. Upon successful completion of the programme, learners are expected to understand and use frequently occurring expressions, communicate in routine tasks requiring a simple exchange of information, and describe aspects of their background, immediate environment and everyday needs at a level consistent with CEFR A2.
